The SKS Mag Adapter Installation of the G3/1

TOOLS NEEDED TO INSTALL THE ADAPTER

You will need:
Set of screw drivers, flat and Phillips head

It is very easy to install the adapter. Just follow the step-by-step instructions below. DO NOT hurry.

FITTING THE ADAPTER. THE FOLLOWING STEPS APPLY TO THE INSTALLATION

1. Clear the rifle of all ammo and remove the mag and the STOCK.
2. Place rifle on your worktable, mag well facing up with the FCG in place. Remove the cross-bolt on the wooden stocks. Set it aside. It will be replaced later.

3. Unscrew the locking bolt just enough to allow the adapter to be placed on the rifle over the rear sight trunnion. Slide the adapter forward so it is under the tab of the rear sight trunnion.

4. Gently place a modified mag under the adapter-locking tab and rotate it to "lock". You are looking for clearance on the back of the mag where it passes the mag release mechanism. If the mag clears
and latches you are good to proceed.

5. If the mag hits the release mechanism on the FCG, remove the adapter and take some material off the two “tangs” on front of the FCG. This will allow some additional clearance for the rear of the mag.

6. When the mag is locked in place, if the front of the mag tab is hitting the adapter, remove a small amount of the tab so it does NOT hit the adapter face, but leave sufficient length to “latch” under the
adapter tab. You may also remove a small amount of the mag tab. This will move the mag forward.

7. If the stock does not close all the way down on the rifle, you will need to remove some material inside the stock where it rests on the flat section of the locking piece. Remove a small amount
(Dremel) and refit. Continue until the rifle is properly mated with the stock. DO NOT remove any material from the outside of the stock.

8. Try and gently insert the mag. If it is tight you will need to remove some material on the inside of the stock to allow the mag to insert properly. If it hits the release mechanism, the stock is pushing the
adapter backwards. Some wood/polymer will need to be relived from inside the stock DO NOT remove any more material from the adapter tab.

9. If you have a stock with a cross-bolt you will need to raise the rear of the rifle in order for the cross-bolt to clear under the receiver flat. Be sure the flat side is toward the rifle. After the cross-bolt is
inserted, re-seat the rifle and replace the nut on the cross-bolt.

10. Open and lock the bolt. Insert a full mag and charge the rifle. Please do this outside if possible and in a safe manner. The bolt should fly forward and scrap a round off and go into battery.

11. If you have the drop free bolt mod, close the bolt, insert a mag and pull the bolt back and let it fly. It should also scrape a round, etc.

12. Go to the range and have fun

The SKS Mag Adapter – Installation of the G5/1

It is very easy to install the adapter. Just follow the step-by-step instructions below. DO NOT get in a hurry.

FITTING THE ADAPTER. THE FOLLOWING STEPS APPLY TO THE INSTALLATION

1. Clear the rifle of all ammo and remove the mag and the STOCK.

2. Place rifle on your worktable, mag well facing up with the FCG in place. Remove the cross-bolt on the wooden stocks. Set it aside. It will be replaced later.

3. Reinstall the trigger group.

4. Unscrew the locking screw just enough to allow the adapter to be placed on the rifle over the mag-locking stub on the rifle. Make sure the adapter locking tab is inserted under the mag-retaining pin on the rifle stub and fully forward and the radius of the locking piece is sitting on the barrel.

5. Tighten the locking bolt so that it is just snug. DO NOT lean on it. You could strip the reads and void your warranty.

6. Gently set a modified mag on the rear release and the piston of the adapter. Push straight down. The mag should “lock up” on both ends. If it doesn’t “smartly” snap in place, try it several times until you get the positioning correct. Put a drop or 2 of oil inside the adapter to loosen it up. "Work" the release to "oil up" the parts.

7. If the mag tab extends pass the angles flat of the piston, shorten it using a file or utility knife. Simply shave off a small portion of the tab until it clears. This will allow some additional clearance for the tab to clear the piston. You want the tab to be just short of the “round” section on the piston. If it isn’t, the piston won’t depress into the adapter body correctly.

8. When the mag is locked in place and your left hand around the mag body, pull the release, rotate the front down and then push it forward. Try to do this as one motion. Practice this motion and it will become second nature to you. You may also just pull the release and the mag MAY drop free if you have clearance on the sides. You can "open up" the mag well of the stock for clearance if needed.

9. If the stock does not close all the way down on the rifle, you will need to remove some material inside the stock where it rests on the flat section of the locking piece. Remove a small amount and refit. Continue until the rifle is properly mated with the stock. DO NOT remove any material from the outside of the stock.

10. Try and gently insert the mag. If it is tight you will need to remove some material on the inside of the stock to allow the mag to insert properly. Continue this process until the mag will "drop free".

11. If you have a stock with a cross-bolt you will need to raise the rear of the rifle in order for the cross-bolt to clear under the receiver flat. Be sure the flat side is toward the rifle. After the cross-bolt is inserted, reseat the rifle and replace the nut on the cross-bolt.

12. Open and lock the bolt. Insert a full mag and charge the rifle. Please do this outside if possible and in a safe manner. The bolt should fly forward and scrap a round and go into battery.

13. If you have the drop free bolt mod, close the bolt, insert a mag and pull the bolt back and let it fly. It should also scrape a round, etc.

14. If you still have problems call us 281.920.4404.

15. Go to the range and have fun.

NEW G9 INSTRUCTIONS:

New instructions are for the redesigned G9 adapter, October 1, 2020 Revision3. Updated 27Jul2022.

NOTE: Safety first. Ensure all ammunition is removed from the firearm and work area so there are no accidents. If possible buy some “dummy rounds”, also known as “snap caps”.

The SKS G9 adapter comes completely assembled. This G9 adapter is for use with the standard SKS rifle platform, NOT the Norinco models D, M, and Sporter modified types using AK 47 magazines

SKS Magazine Adapter, G9, Testing & Installation Guide

These instructions are for the G9 adapter purchased AFTER January 1, 2020.

Read this “guide” several times so you understand how the system works. If you have questions, please call us, 713.498.9990. DO NOT alter the G9 or the magazines in any way.

These are the parts that make up the G9 adapter.

1.         The main adapter body

2.         The side plate, with 4 screws

3.         The G9 front locking lug

4.         The forward locking screw w/ lock washer

5.         The assembled mag catch bar

6.         The mag release spring

7.         The standard AR 15 mag release button

8.         The longer trigger assembly locking pin

9.         Allen Wrench for installation

Terms for you to be familiar with and “how to” test fit the G9 adapter and magazine to your SKS:

A – Rear Sight Trunion

(The “L” shaped TAB rear sight trunnion at 6:00 on the bottom of your SKS Rifle). The trunnion is part of the rear sight assembly. It is the portion of the assembly located on the bottom of the barrel. This is forward of the rifles magazine well. Do not alter this original trunnion; you need it to secure the forward locking point on the G9 adapter to it.

B – Trigger Tangs –

(These are the forward facing two tangs that are original with all variants of the SKS Rifle). These tangs will need to be made shorter. Measure from the back of the cross pin forward. The “trigger tangs” on a stock SKS trigger assembly measure approximately .4275 inches from the back side of the latching pin to the front edge of the tangs. These need to be shortened to .2000 - .2500 inches depending on your rifle. You MUST do this before you can successfully install the G9 adapter. Then set the trigger group aside.

C – ASC 7.62x39mmMagazine for the use in the SKS 7.62X39MM, SKS G9 Adapter –

This steel magazine, made by “Ammunition Storage Components”, is an AR-15 style magazine for use with the SKS G9 adapter and modified by us. Do not alter the ASC magazine without contacting us first. LINK to ASC: www.ammosc.com

D – This should really be item “T” for Tolerances –

The G9 has some very close tolerances to feed the x39 rounds. Small adjustments make a big difference in running like butter or jamming. You will love the way this G9 runs with the AR-15 Style Magazines. Go slow until you really understand the tolerance and relationship of magazine to adapter, magazine to rifle, receiver to bolt, etc. All these parts have to be dancing to the same music, so think symphony orchestra not heavy metal. Thousands of an inch can make a big difference.

E - Drop free bolt mod (DFBM) –

The DFBM may not be required. However, if you wish to remove the magazine with the bolt closed, you will need to do this mod, or, the bolt will bind on the mag lips. The drop free bolt modification reduces the bolt width which allows the AR-15 style magazines to ride higher into the SKS Receiver magazine well.

F – Test Fit the Magazine with the SKS G9 Adapter before installing into the rifle –

Hold the SKS G9 adapter in one hand with it parallel to the floor (just like it would be when mounted into the SKS rifle). Slide the ASC Magazine into the adapter to see it latch up in the G9 adapter before you attempt to mount the adapter into your SKS Rifle. The Magazine loads into the adapter just like it would load into an AR-15 style rifle. Once you have placed the Magazine into the adapter hold the adapter level like it would be in the rifle and press the magazine release button. The Magazine should drop free. This test will help you see it work before you fire this system. This test also lets you see how the G9 system works. The magazine should lock into the adapter and the magazine release button should release the magazine and gravity should cause the magazine to drop out of the G9 adapter system freely.

G – Dummy Rounds

Use “dummy rounds’ or snap caps whenever possible.

The SKS G9 Adapter – Test Fit and Installation- Fining the “Sweet Spot”

1. Place rifle on your work surface. Clear the rifle of all ammunition, check the chamber also. Remove the trigger assembly, SKS 10 round internal box style magazine, and the stock. Ensure all magazines you are working with are free of any ammo.

2. Set your stock and the original SKS 10 round magazine aside for now. We will install it later.

3. Refer to item “B” above “Trigger Tangs”. This must be done before you can assemble the G9 system.

4. Remove and replace the short trigger assemblies cross pin with the enclosed longer trigger assembly locking pin. Tap the cross pin toward the side using a hammer and punch, insert the longer pin and finishing tapping out the short pin. If you remove the short pin completely you may be looking for a “launched spring”, sear and mag catch. Install the trigger group into the rifle and lock it down.

5. Place the rifle lying flat on your work surface with the bottom of the rifle facing up:

A. Slide the G9 front locking lug onto the rear sight trunnion.

B. You want to “fish” the rear of the G9 adapter onto the longer trigger assembly pin you just installed on the trigger assembly. Tip the rear of the G9 down so the “channels” cut on the inside, slides over the trigger pin.

C. Lay the front of the G9 adapter (duckbill) down so it sits flat on the magazine well and over the locking lug. Position the locking lug so you can see all the threads down through the hole in the slot. Install the lock washer and locking screw loosely. You want the G9 to be able to “slide” on the receiver flat of rifle.

6. Finding the magazine 'Sweet Spot' -

A. Lock the bolt open by pushing the “bolt hold open” upward to lock the bolt with safety on.

B. Using the supplied “Allen wrench”, continue to tighten locking screw just enough so the G9 slides on the rifle. DO NOT LOCK IT DOWN YET. The adapter must be able to easily “slide” on the receiver flats.

C. Make sure the rear of the adapter is held in place by the longer trigger assembly pin. The pin was installed in item “Number 2” above.

D. Insert the EMPTY ASC mag with a gentle “pop’ with your hand (it should easily lock into the G9 Magazine. You likely will see the adapter “slide” on the receiver flats as the magazine locks up.

E. Press the mag release button. Did the mag easily pop up? You have now found what we refer to as the “sweet spot” for this specific SKS rifle. Do this several times to be sure the mag pops up freely.

F. Lock the mag back in, tighten the bolt.

G. Check the magazine feed lips of the modified magazine. They should be parallel or almost parallel to the receiver “flats”.

H. Now that the front screw is tight, repeat this test to insure the mag works properly. It should easily “pop” out of the G9 adapter.

I. Let’s continue, with the mag hanging down (in normal firing position) release the mag. Did the magazine drop free? It may not drop completely out yet. The adapter and mag may need to “wear in” Do it several more times as you did above.

J. If you have “successfully completed” the 6 steps above the G9 adapter is properly adjusted for your specific SKS. Go to the “Mag Function Tests”.

Mag Function Tests of the system:

Once you have the adapter position adjusted to your rifle (using the steps from above w/mag inserted), tighten the adapter locking bolt on the front of the adapter with the supplied Allen wrench. You now should be able to release/insert and lock the magazine in your adapter using only one finger. If the magazine locks up and releases freely you are ready to cycle a few dummy rounds as a test. If it doesn’t pass this test (the single finger test), redo step 5 above or give us a call. Remember, just a few thousandths is a big issue.

Using an ASC modified magazine, manufactured for the SKS G9 Adapter, load 4 or 6 “dummy rounds” into the magazine. Lock the bolt open (safety on) using the SKS BHO “bolt-hold-open” to keep the bolt locked rearward. Insert the magazine and charge the rifle. The bolt should fly forward and scrap a round and go into battery ready to fire. You should be able to cycle the 4 to 6 rounds one right behind the other by pulling the bolt all the way back and letting it ‘fly’ forward repeatedly. “Hook” your index finger over the charging handle. Pull the bolt as fast as you can and let your finger relax when the bolt “bottoms”. Don’t stop and hold the bolt. Pull it and let go.

Notes and experience from our tests:

A. The magazines should be cleaned from time to time on the inside and outside. If the magazine is not clean rounds may not move as freely as they will when clean. We use a dry silicone spray to lube the inside of the magazines and find this works well for us.

B. We tested many SKS’s with various amounts of use, wear and tear. We found each rifle needed a slightly different adjustment to the "sweet spot", of the G9 to cycle rounds one right after the other.

The Rifles stock modification/adjustments to accept the G9 Adapter –

Every stock manufacture will have slight differences). The G9 adapter is wider than the standard SKS stock magwell opening in any SKS rifle Stock. “D”, “M” and “Sporter” stock exceptions. You will need to open up the stocks magwell to allow the G9 to fit inside the stock magwell opening. We used a mini mill to remove material from inside the stock, then test fit until the stock fits around the adapter. You can also use a drill press, drill, Dremel of similar tooling.

At this printing, there are no after-market “ready-to-go” stocks for the SKS G9 adapter that are ‘drop-in ready”. We have used an “M” and “D” stocks with great success. It only required the removal of some material at the rear and front of the stock magwell.  We have also modified a standard wood Yugo stock, several Tapco, T6 style stocks, some Russian factory stocks and some ‘no-name’ wood stocks. We have successfully modified several SGW Bullpup stocks using the mill to "open them up". While it can be done with a Dremel, care should be exercised to undercut the stock and spread it for a tight, clean look.

Marking the rifle stock for inletting:

The easiest way to ‘mark’ your stock for relief is lay the adapter on the stocks bottom and tape around it with blue painters tape (or similar). Relieve the area inside the tape, taking care not to cut the tape. Finish shaping with a File or Dremel. Before you begin to cut your rifle stock, place the stock alongside your rifle with the G9 adapter installed. Align the Rifle Stock with the Rifle Barrel attachment points. Place blue painters tape (or similar) on the Rifle Stock to indicate the forward and rearward borders of where you will need to cut out stock material. Next, take the G9 adapter off the rifle and place the G9 onto your, “un-cut” bottom of the stock and mark the side width with the tape. Check and double check yourself before you begin to cut your stock. Measure twice and cut JUST once.

Final assembly of your rifle:

Congrats you are almost finished. You need your SKS rifle, the trigger assembly “FCG”, your stock properly trimmed, an empty modified ASC magazine and your G9 adapter. Make sure the safety is “on”. Remove the FCG; install the front locking lug, now the stock onto your SKS. Lock the trigger assembly in place. Insert the G9 magazine adapter per the above instructions. Check that the G9 is locked in place correctly. Lock the bolt back using the BHO. Insert the empty mag and re-check for proper operation as you did in step 5 above. Lock her down. If you have any problems call us: 713.498.9990.
